West Hartford Public Library (WHPL) is seeking a community-oriented art curator to develop, manage, and promote public art shows in the gallery space of the Noah Webster Library in West Hartford, Connecticut. Noah Webster Library is the largest and busiest of West Hartford’s three libraries, and is a popular destination for residents of both West Hartford and surrounding towns. Centrally located in West Hartford Center and Blue Back Square, the gallery has featured many professionally-curated shows to date, including Juneteenth, A Way with Words, Circle, Orange, and Connecticut Creatures. By offering diverse, unique, and high-quality art shows, WHPL seeks to promote art literacy, provide community members of all ages access to art and culture, and support the local creative community. Responsibilities - Choose engaging themes, paying particular attention to highlighting cultural celebrations and marginalized identities. - Collaborate with library staff to solicit submissions of artwork from local artists through print and electronic media. - Manage all communication with artists. - Jury submitted artwork. - Manage all submitted artwork; collect, install, remove, and return pieces to artists. Required Qualifications - At least 2 years’ experience curating art shows. - A demonstrated understanding of principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). - Ability to create engaging and eye-catching graphics and collateral. - Ability to work within the confines of library practices, hours, equipment, and facilities. Preferred Qualifications - Well-connected in local art scene - Experience working in nonprofit spaces.
